What makes TekMate's hardware superior to the other ELM-based solutions already out there?

A lot. First, it was designed to use the highest quality parts. Second, we surfaced mounted the entire contents of the connector to dissipate heat better and for a better physical size. Finally, by designing for a USB bus, we used the latest technology for instead of making you buy a USB-to-serial adaptor.

Will the TekMate interface work with other ELM-based serial software?

Yes. By designing our electrical interface to use a USB-to-serial bridge chip we allow the computer operating system to think it's still working with a standard RS-232 serial port. Now you get the best of both worlds, better and more reliable USB bus and easy to program serial interface.

How will this help me fix my car?

It's not going to fix your car. What it's going to do is help you diagnose it so that you can be better informed about what to fix and whether you can even do the work.

Will this reset the oil and service interval lights ona BMW or Mercedes?

No, they require a special tool just for that. The OBD-II standard does not include support for manufacturer specific functions like that.

What version do I need?

Simple, with a few exceptions all 1996 - 2003 Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, and Saleen vehicles will use PWM. All GM (Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Hummer, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Saturn (except VUE), etc. use VPW. European and Asian vehicles will use ISO.

What is CAN?

CAN is short for Controller Area Network. It will be the required electrical interface for all vehicles beginning in the model year of 2008. Some vendors began using CAN exclusively in the model year of 2004 (Ford, Jaguar, and Mazda). While other manufacturers implemented it selectively in their vehicles beginning in the 2004 model year (Mercedes, Porsche, SAAB, and Toyota for example).

Is the CAN unit ELM-based?

No, ELM has no CAN solution. This is our own design.

Do you offer all four vehicle interfaces ina single connector (4-in-1)?
